Every once in a while there are movies that expand the definition of quality film-making. This is one of those movies.

Here is an incredible, yet delicate film that follows three children from poor families who are stuck living in subpar motels. Their lives and friendships are portrayed with honesty and precise aesthetics. It’s a story that at first seems as plot-free as life itself.

It succeeds in capturing an innocence that is usually reserved to a child’s imagination: a precarious living condition full of adventures and fun. It’s hard to describe it beyond that; it’s the kind of film that must be seen to be fully understood.

And it ends on a very high note.

Really empathetic movie where the characters are frustrating but understandable.

The strangest film I’ve ever seen, and one of the most disturbing, too. William Dafoe is amazing as usual. The one redeeming quality of the mother is that she loves her daughter, and will do anything for her, even at the risk of losing her. She puts the fun back in dysfunctional!

Nice cinemaphotography, good acting, cute story line with the kids but also has alot of depth and messages about government system.

I agree that this movie had many heart-felt moments but I find it hard to sympathize with the mother of the main character in this movie. Turning tricks off Backpage in the one room hotel room they live in while her daughter is in the bath was shocking and disturbing and then pounding out her neighbor/friend for calling her out on it was just great….also the scene where she digs in her track pants and slaps her dirty maxi-pad on the glass door of the motel office in a rage at the manager…..wow

Don’t watch it if you abhor movies about dysfunctional people.

Excellent portrayal of the lives of children from a growing up in poor neighborhoods. Almost cried at the end.
